For Melbourne Fringe 2002, Avant staged two productions; Lamenting and Tight Circle, written by Puva Arumugam and directed by G.Selva, dealing with feminine issues with Asian themes.
Lamenting Lamenting, a comedy that looks at three friends meeting after a period of time. Their lives have taken different paths since their university days. Having studied in Australia, the ladies grapple with eastern values and western exposure. Their search for the one true love leads them to discuss common issues on meeting the right person, dealing with social-norms and the challenges of living in an ideologically conservative society. Tight Circle Having been put in a Tight Circle, an Indian woman is accused of defaming her husband through a book she had written. She then shocks the entire court when she confesses for a murder she committed. Taken from an Indian woman's perspective, this play shows how far an oppressed woman will go for revenge and freedom and how the legal system handles this twist in scenario. The plays was staged at The Space from 2 - 5 October 2002 from 7.30 pm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
